Law Firm Financial Reporting 101:  Understanding the Fundamentals to Making an Impact

Speaker: Joel Ferguson

Law firms, indeed all business organizations, rely on timely and accurate financial information for firm management, partner compensation, tax reporting and meeting compliance requirements.  The responsibility for fulfilling those needs generally falls on firm administrative team members, with varying levels of experience in finance and accounting.  It is important that responsible administrators have an understanding of not only the fundamental, conventional approach to law firm financial reporting, but also to become familiar with the variety of reporting approaches that can provide crucial planning and decision-making information to firm leadership.

In this session, we will review the makeup and use of the 3 basic financial statements, then look at a number of additional reports that provide meaningful financial information, useful in assessing firm performance, improving decision-making and anticipating – and responding to – future financial challenges.  This interactive session will be of value to law firm administrators regardless of experience in accounting and financial reporting.

A seasoned business leader and former practicing CPA, Joel has a broad background in all aspects of business operations and management.  Joel has over 40 years of business experience, having served as Managing Partner of the Houston office of Pannell Kerr Forster, an international CPA and consulting firm; as President and CFO of Cordúa Restaurants, an award-winning independent restaurant chain; certified mediator and arbitrator in business, community, and family disputes; experienced trainer and group facilitator in organizational effectiveness, coaching and communications.  He recently served as Executive Vice President of Austin Recovery and The Council on Recovery, two leading not-for-profit agencies devoted to helping all those who suffer from the adverse effects of drugs and alcohol.  He is the founder of a consulting firm specializing in organizational strategy, team facilitation and individual coaching, serving clients in Central Texas and the Gulf Coast.

Joel is a graduate of Rice University and its Jones Graduate School of Business, with degrees in Economics, Management and Accounting. Joel was an adjunct faculty member at Rice University and is a Senior Fellow and former Board member with the American Leadership Forum.
